Lucky to be here

I’m lucky to be alive… after that time I drove drunk but somehow miraculously made it home.  After that time I married an alcoholic and stayed married to him for twenty years. And after that time I had two babies in St. Croix, far away from family, and hemorrhaged after one of the births and thought I was a goner for sure. And after that time my husband got fired when my third baby was a week old. After that time that I signed on to a Chinese Junk to go around the world, but after quitting my job and helping clean up the ship, the trip was cancelled.  After going to Puerto Rico with very little money, expecting to find a job I didn’t find. Lucky, too, that I survived pneumonia at age 5 and appendicitis at age 9.  Or that time my parents accidentally (I think it was an accident) left me at a gas station in Italy when I was five years old. And that hysterectomy I had because of a growth that turned out to be non-malignant and had that hemorrhoidectomy because they said I’d never have them again but then I did. And that breast tumor that was small enough and I was old enough that I didn’t have to have chemotherapy, radiation, or lymph node removal, just a lumpectomy. And for driving for an hour each way to work, often in the snow, sometimes in blizzard like conditions, for 14 years.  You can see I was lucky.
